Chestnut Hill, MA: At Restoring Sight International Inc.(RSI), Spring Music Festival, music lovers are also generous donors and benefactors. The mission: No person should be needlessly blind is echoed in the messages of Philippine President, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of Boston.
"The eyes have it" would be an inadequate description as attendees enjoyed not just the visuals but the music of the night. Featured artists include Alegria O. Ferrer (Soprano); Joey Purpura (Neil Diamond Tribute Artist); Bruce Devon (Pianist); Richard Ramon Bunbury (Baritone); Allegra Devon (Cellist) and Drew Maletz (Pianist, Composer). RSI was established in 1996, as a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the prevention of blindness among the poor in the United States and the rest of the world through the delivery of quality eye care services, the treatment of eye diseases, and education.
As its first target, RSI has partnered with The Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines (OFPHIL) to address the high incidence of curable blindness in the Philippines. RSI is currently focused on aiding OFPHIL in its fight against blindness in the multitude of underprivileged communities in the Philippines.
The Founder: A Pioneer, An Inventor, A Humanitarian: Felipe I. Tolentino, MD
A graduate of the Medical School of the University of the Philippines, Dr.Tolentino built his professional reputation as a distinguished member of the Boston medical establishment. He joined the Schepens Eye Research Institute in 1962 as a clinical and research fellow in vitreo-retinal diseases and soon after became a trailblazer in the field. In 1976 he coauthored (with Drs. Schepens and Freeman) a pioneering book, "Vitreoretinal Disorders, Diagnosis and Management," which elucidates the role of the vitreous in retinal diseases. He has co-authored altogether three books on ocular diseases and surgery, written hundreds of original journal articles, dozens of invited book chapters, and delivered hundreds of invited lectures.
