(Reporter7.com 2006-06-14) When a California baker delivered a custom-designed cake to a beautiful quantum fiction novelist, he had no idea he would be part of a historic quantum leap for humankind's dream to fly to the stars.
On the first day of summer 2004, two years ago June 21, US cake designer and baker Hector Navarro of Cakeland in Southern California didn't know that the custom-designed cake his bakery delivered to lovely Hollywood talent Vanna Bonta would be part of history. He explained that the honey-voiced "FLIGHT Quantum Fiction" author had emailed him photos of what seemed like
a futuristic airplane to reproduce into digital frosting when she ordered a cake that she wanted inscribed with the word "SpaceShipOne."

"I didn't know what SpaceShipOne was, I don't think the world even knew!" Navarro, an award-winning cake designer, said. He later realized the photographs Bonta provided with her request for digital icing were test flight photos of Earth's first successful rocket plane.

Poetic prodigy Bonta was taking the tasty torte to the Mojave Desert that day, where she was traveling to witness the first public launch of a privately funded and built space craft, designed by aviation genius Burt Rutan. The cake was packed into an RV with other supplies as a surprise for her husband, who designed and built the vehicle's rocket avionics, and a group of friends and associates.

That group would later revel and dance by the Mojave (now Space Port) tarmac until wee hours preceding the launch. Though probably a larger crowd than Kitty Hawk, the turnout was sparse compared to the magnitude of the event taking place. The visionaries were gathered, as usual, before media, but Discovery Channel was present making a documentary, and they filmed Bonta's cake. The rest is history.

Navarro's confection appears in "Black Sky: The Race For Space," Discovery Channel's two-hour special documentary about Burt Rutan, Scaled Composites and the successful launch that day, among the greatest accomplishments in aviation history since the Wright brothers.
